When a Tree Needs to Come Down

Not every tree needs to come down. But when one does — whether diseased, damaged by a storm, growing too close to your home, or at the end of its life — it needs to come down the right way. That means a proper assessment first, a clear plan, and a crew that knows what they're doing.

Sylvan Scapes brings ISA Certified Arborist expertise to every tree removal in Staunton and the surrounding area. We assess the tree, walk the property with you, and put together a written estimate that tells you exactly what's involved. No guesswork, no surprises.

When Does a Tree Need to Come Down?
  • Dead or dying tree poses a fall risk to home, vehicle, or property
  • Storm damage has left the tree structurally compromised
  • Disease has spread too far for treatment to be effective
  • Roots are damaging foundation, driveway, or underground utilities
  • Crowding other healthy trees or blocking critical sunlight
  • Construction or landscaping project requires clearing

Why Pruning Matters

More Than Just Keeping Trees Tidy

Pruning isn't just about appearances. Done correctly, it promotes healthier growth, extends the life of the tree, and reduces storm damage risk by removing weak branches before they become a problem.

Done incorrectly, it can permanently damage or shorten the life of a tree. That's the difference between a trained arborist and someone with a ladder and a chainsaw. Our team has spent over two decades learning how trees in the Shenandoah Valley grow — and when to leave a branch alone.

What We Prune & Trim
  • Mature shade trees (oaks, maples, elms, sycamores)
  • Ornamental and flowering trees
  • Fruit trees (structural pruning for long-term health)
  • Young trees (structural pruning for long-term health)
  • Hazardous or storm-damaged limbs
  • Branches over rooftops, driveways, or power lines

Seasonal Pruning Guide

When Should You Prune? — Virginia Trees

Late Winter / Early Spring

Trees are dormant. Wounds heal faster at bud break. Pests and disease less active. Ideal for most hardwoods.

After a Storm

Damaged or hanging limbs should be addressed as soon as safely possible to prevent further damage or injury.

Before Storm Season

Remove weak branches before high winds arrive. Protects your property and reduces emergency risk.

When You Notice Crowding / Deadwood

Crossing branches or dead wood are signs a tree is overdue for pruning — don't wait for storm season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tree Pruning in Virginia

Is tree trimming the same as tree pruning?

Trimming typically refers to shaping for aesthetics, while pruning focuses on tree health — removing dead, diseased, or structurally weak branches. Both require knowledge of tree biology to avoid damage.

How often should trees be pruned?

Most mature trees benefit from pruning every 3–5 years. Young trees may need more frequent structural pruning. Our arborist will assess your trees and recommend a schedule.

Can pruning damage a tree?

Improper pruning can cause lasting damage. Topping, flush cuts, and over-pruning are common mistakes. ISA-certified pruning follows ANSI A300 standards to protect tree health.

Do you prune fruit trees?

Yes. Fruit tree pruning requires a different approach than shade trees — focused on structure, airflow, and productive growth. We prune fruit trees in late winter before bud break.

Healthy Trees Don't Happen by Accident

Most tree problems are preventable. Disease, pest infestations, and nutrient deficiencies rarely appear overnight — they develop over months or years, often going unnoticed until significant damage has occurred. Catching them early is far less expensive than removing a tree that could have been saved.

Sylvan Scapes offers a structured plant health care program guided by ISA Certified Arborist standards. We assess your trees and ornamental plantings, identify existing or emerging issues, and develop a treatment plan tailored to your property and the species on it.

What's Included in a Health Assessment
  • Full property walk-through with ISA Certified Arborist
  • Visual inspection of canopy, bark, root zone, and soil
  • Identification of pest activity, disease symptoms, or structural concerns
  • Soil sampling and lab analysis (where applicable)
  • Written findings and recommended treatment plan
  • Follow-up consultation to review results and answer questions

Plant Health Care Services

What We Treat & Manage

Our plant health care program covers a broad range of conditions common to trees and ornamentals in the Shenandoah Valley.

🦠
Disease Diagnosis & Treatment

Fungal diseases, bacterial infections, and canker diseases are common in Virginia. Early diagnosis and targeted treatment can stop spread and save affected trees.

🐛
Pest Management

Emerald ash borer, spotted lanternfly, scale insects, and borers are active threats in the Shenandoah Valley. We identify infestations early and recommend appropriate treatment.

🌱
Soil Health & Fertilization

Compacted soil, nutrient deficiencies, and pH imbalances limit tree health. Soil testing identifies specific deficiencies, and targeted fertilization corrects them.

💧
Root Zone Management

Root zone aeration, mulching, and soil amendment improve moisture retention and reduce compaction — critical for trees in high-traffic or construction-affected areas.

🌿
Ornamental Plant Care

Shrubs, flowering trees, and ornamental plantings require species-specific care. We assess and treat ornamentals alongside your trees for a comprehensive property health program.

📋
Ongoing Monitoring Programs

Annual or seasonal monitoring visits keep your trees on a proactive care schedule — catching new issues before they escalate and documenting the health of your property over time.

Why It Matters

The Cost of Waiting

A mature tree can take 20–50 years to reach its full size and value. Losing one to a preventable disease or pest infestation — when early intervention could have saved it — is both a financial and aesthetic loss that takes decades to recover from.

Proactive plant health care is significantly less expensive than emergency removal. A single health assessment and treatment program can extend the life of a tree by years or decades. Our ISA Certified Arborist can identify warning signs that most homeowners wouldn't notice until the damage is already done.

Common Warning Signs
  • Premature leaf drop or unusual leaf color in summer
  • Dieback in the upper canopy — dead branches spreading downward
  • Bark cracks, oozing sap, or visible fungal growth
  • Small holes or sawdust-like frass on bark (borer activity)
  • Yellowing leaves or stunted growth despite adequate water
  • Wilting that doesn't recover after rain
Photo: Arborist Inspecting Tree Canopy
Shenandoah Valley Threats to Watch
  • Emerald Ash Borer — threatens all ash species
  • Spotted Lanternfly — expanding range in VA
  • Oak Wilt — fatal fungal disease in oaks
  • Thousand Cankers Disease — walnut trees
  • Anthracnose — common in dogwoods & sycamores
Frequently Asked Questions

Plant & Tree Health Care

How do I know if my tree is sick?

Common signs include premature leaf drop, unusual discoloration, dieback in the canopy, bark abnormalities, or visible pest activity. If you're unsure, a professional assessment is the most reliable way to know.

Can a diseased tree be saved?

It depends on the disease, how far it has progressed, and the species. Many diseases are treatable if caught early. Our arborist will give you an honest assessment of what's possible and what it would take.

What is the emerald ash borer and should I be concerned?

The emerald ash borer is an invasive beetle that has killed hundreds of millions of ash trees across North America. It's present in Virginia. All ash trees in the Shenandoah Valley are at risk. Preventive treatment is available and effective.

Do you do soil testing?

Yes. Soil testing is part of our health assessment process when soil conditions are suspected to be a contributing factor. Lab results guide our fertilization and amendment recommendations.

Why Remove That Stump?

More Than an Eyesore

A tree stump left in the yard isn't just an eyesore. It can attract pests (termites, carpenter ants), become a tripping hazard, send up new shoots for years, and make mowing a challenge. Stump grinding removes the problem completely — down below grade — so your yard looks like the tree was never there.

What's Included
  • Grinding the stump down below ground level
  • Cleanup of grindings and debris
  • Optional: backfilling with soil or grindings (your preference)
  • After grinding, area is fully plantable within 1–2 seasons

Do I Need Stump Grinding?

Signs It's Time to Remove That Stump

  • You want to replant in the same area
  • The stump is in a visible or heavily used part of the yard
  • You're concerned about pest activity (stumps attract termites & carpenter ants)
  • The stump is near a foundation, walkway, or driveway
  • New shoots keep growing from the stump — grinding stops this permanently
  • You simply want a clean, hazard-free yard
  • The stump is creating a mowing obstacle
  • You're improving curb appeal or preparing to sell your home
Frequently Asked Questions

Stump Grinding

How long does stump grinding take?

Most residential stumps can be ground in 1–2 hours. Larger stumps or multiple stumps may take longer. We'll give you a time estimate when we provide the quote.

How deep does stump grinding go?

We typically grind 6–12 inches below grade, which is sufficient for replanting. Deeper grinding is available if needed for construction or specific landscaping projects.

Can I plant grass over a ground stump?

Yes. After grinding, the area can be backfilled with topsoil and seeded. Grass typically establishes well within one to two growing seasons as the remaining wood decomposes.

Will you clean up the wood chips after grinding?

Yes. Cleanup of grindings and debris is included. You can also keep the wood chips for mulch — just let us know your preference when scheduling.

Built on Expertise, Grown on Trust

Kevin Thompson founded Sylvan Scapes in 2003 — back when it was a one-truck operation he ran out of Staunton. Over two decades later, the company has grown into a full crew covering tree service, landscaping, and property care across the Shenandoah Valley. What hasn't changed is the standard of expertise and care that every project receives.

Kevin holds two credentials that matter when you're trusting someone with the trees on your property. As an ISA Certified Arborist, he's passed the International Society of Arboriculture's expert-level exam covering tree biology, risk assessment, pruning, and removal. As a CTSP — Certified Treecare Safety Professional through the Tree Care Industry Association — he operates under safety standards that are annually reviewed. These credentials set the standard for how every Sylvan Scapes project is run.
